AROLMRA as we know it, is steeped in great tradition. From humble beginnings to the powerhouse it is now. Here is her story.......
Australia's first lawn mower race was dreamt up in a small country pub
at Harrietville in Northern Victoria in 1987.
The story goes that.....
Sitting in the Harrietville Pub, Five blokes spontaniously challenged each other to a race around the local hills of the area. From all reports, they chugged up the steep slopes belching smoke from thier unmodified Briggs and Strattons, rounded a nominated gum tree, then flew down in "Angel Gear" (neutral).
For the record a rogue called "Roger Schaeffer" won on his Rover Rancher.
"Half of Harrietville's 100 people and 150 dogs were there" says Brian "Muddy" Ross.
The Harrietville Lawn mower races were a spectacular fundraiser for the Harrietville Country Fire Brigade. Six meetings were held in total, raising $5000 a time.
All the while "Lawn Mower Racing" as a sport was gathering momentum, with more and more people interested in doing this very unique sport. So the group decided to make it official.
The Inaugural AGM of the Australian Ride-on Lawn Mower Racing Association Inc. (AROLMRA) was held on July 23rd 2000. It was held in Harrietville. And for the record, those who were present were
Brian "MUDDY" Ross (President)
Roger Schaefer (Vice President)
Gabby Schumann (Treasurer)
Marilyn Watkins (Secretary)
Jason Vos
Mark Jackson,
Graham Crawford
Matthew Mortimer
Grant Mortimer
Jamie Newton
Gary Jennings
Ross Leonard
Tim Cryer
Brian "Muddy" Ross went on to become 6 time president of AROLMRA.
At 61 has retired from racing in 2008. (PICTURED RIGHT)
